Google to open first stand-alone retail outlet in Ireland

RBR Staff Writer Published 09 February 2012

Internet giant Google is planning to open its first stand-alone retail outlet at its European headquarters in Dublin, after a trial at a computer shop in London.

Irish unit of the firm said in a local planning application that the Google Store would sell unspecified Google merchandise. The new store will be located in the Montevetro office block on Dublin's Barrow Street.

The retail shop is expected to have about 1,323ft² of space including an added mezzanine floor designed to draw attention from passersby, according to Bloomberg.

The Internet search engine major, which makes smartphone operating software, is competing with consumer electronics retailer Apple.

Google is reportedly in the process of acquiring Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.5bn to help it compete with Apple's phones and Microsoft's mobile software.

Bloomberg quoted Google as saying that while the company do have the option to open retail space, it is examining all potential uses.

According to the document filed, the firm plans to add a 570ft² mezzanine floor to the store space for use by business partners and contributors.

Google is likely to have more than 3,000 employees in the Dublin area after it expands into the building and refurbishes its existing headquarters across the street.
